Team Qatar on Pole for Race 1 of Nations Cup in Khor Fakkan

Thursday, 29 March, KHOR FAKKAN (Sharjah, UAE): Team Qatar’s Khalid Al Shamlan will start race 1 of the Nations Cup in pole position after posting the fastest time in an interrupted qualifying session which was yellow flagged after a crash involving boats from Team Brunei and Team Brazil.

For the second time in two days the fight for the top three places was between the two Middle East rivals; Al Shamlan and Team UAE’s Majed Al Mansoori traded times and places throughout the session, with Al Shamlan snatching the pole by less than 2/10ths of a second with a time of 48.92secs - just moments before the yellow flag came out.

Mansoori’s teammate Rashed Al Tayer and Finland’s Risto Painio swapped times in the early part of qualifying, with Al Tayer holding out to take third spot, posting a time of 50.37secs as Painio came under pressure and was bumped down to fifth spot after a late charge by Rhys Coles running in the Team Brazil number two boat. Ismail bin Hj Kabon completed the top six for Team Brunei.

The one hour session was halted on 46 minutes after Brazil’s Lebos Chaguri and Brunei’s Nordin bin Hj Mohammad collided. Both pilots were immediately taken to the on-site medical facilities, with Mohammad released immediately. Chaguri was then taken to the local hospital in Khor Fakkan, purely as a precautionary measure after swallowing a considerable amount of water.
